Beat Plastic Pollution by Rethinking Business Impact

Behind every product that is manufactured or service provided, a broader environmental footprint includes energy use, emissions, and resource consumption.

World Environment Day: #BeatPlasticPollution by Rethinking Business Impact background

This World Environment Day focuses on #BeatPlasticPollution, but the message goes much deeper.

Plastic waste is just one piece of the puzzle. Behind every product that is manufactured or service provided, a broader environmental footprint includes energy use, emissions, and resource consumption.

This is an opportunity for businesses to reflect on operations and make meaningful changes, especially in manufacturing and energy-intensive sectors. Many steps that help reduce pollution also improve efficiency and cut costs. The two go hand in hand.

Beyond Plastic: Looking at the Bigger Picture

Reducing single-use plastics and improving material choices are essential, but businesses should also be asking:

  • Are we using more energy than we need to?
  • Are our lighting, machinery, and heating systems running efficiently?
  • Are we creating unnecessary waste in our processes?

Often, the answers reveal hidden opportunities for improvement.

  • Switching from old fluorescent lights to LED lighting
  • Upgrading old, ageing, and inefficient equipment with newer, energy-efficient equipment
  • The use of non-invasive submeters to conduct a temporary meter survey on plants and machinery to better understand energy consumption
  • Installing real-time monitoring tools that can make a measurable difference, not just to carbon emissions, but to the bottom line of any business

There is an alternative to PET-based Plastics that are more sustainable, and we would like to celebrate one of our clients, which is leading by example, Elite Plastics, a business that has taken a positive stride towards sustainability. They built ‘Sustain, a polythene blend using sugarcane instead of oil as the primary raw material. Sugarcane is a renewable resource, and when it is grown, it captures CO2 from the environment, producing oxygen. In addition to this, they have also developed and manufactured ‘eComp, a plant-based bioplastic. This pioneering compostable polythene is derived from corn and provides customers with a 100% compostable, plant-based alternative to single-use polythene. So, if reduction is not possible, there are alternative options that are environmentally friendly and sustainable.

We strongly believe that every business, regardless of size, has a role in building a more sustainable future, and we’re here to make that journey easier.

This World Environment Day, let’s go beyond awareness. Let’s act.

Whether cutting plastic waste or reducing energy use, small changes today make a big difference tomorrow.

At Pro Enviro, we help businesses understand where they stand regarding their energy spend and what practical steps can be taken to improve. We offer eligible SMEs a fully funded energy assessment through the BEAS (Business Energy Advice Service) programme, funded by Business Growth West Midlands.

This assessment provides:

  • A complete, comprehensive review of their current energy use
  • Identification of cost-saving opportunities
  • A tailored roadmap to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency
